Science & Technology in Action


The Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) was established in September 2010 by Teacher Education Section (TES) of the Department of Education and Skills (DES) following a re-conceptualisation of support and continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers in primary and post- primary schools.

Today, PDST encompasses the supports previously supplied by other support services and programmes, including Primary Professional Development Service (PPDS), Second-Level Support Service (SLSS), Leadership Development Service (LDS), Junior Cycle Physical Education, (JCPE), Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA), Transition Year (TY), School Development Planning (SDP), Junior Certificate Schools Programme (JCSP), Reading Recovery, Maths Recovery, an tSeirbhís Tacaíochta Dara Leibhéal don Ghaeilge (STDL Gaeilge)and the National Centre for Technology in Education (now known as PDST Technology in Education).

The aim of PDST is to provide high quality professional development and support that empowers teachers and schools to provide the best possible education for all pupils /students. Our mission is to support teachers as reflective practitioners by promoting teacher learning, collaboration and evidence-based practice. Supports and CPD available to principals and teachers include: 

  • Subject  specific and curriculum  support
  • National seminars in priority areas, such as school self-evaluation, literacy and numeracy;
  • Projects focused on key educational themes;
  • Teacher professional networks (TPNs);
  • Online learning and support;
  • Leadership programmes;
  • Programme-specific including JCSP, TY, LCA & LCVP;
  • In-school support in a range of areas to support learning and teaching;
  • In-school support for DEIS planning
